What is something most people do not know about you? I used to be extremely shy and didn’t like speaking in front of people. It wasn’t until I met my husband that I opened up more. Now you can’t keep me quiet for long.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? Both! Although I walk more now than I used to since I became a RunHER.

What is your favorite race distance? 10k

What is your favorite place to run or walk? Trails in Cole Harbour

When did you start running or walking? 6 1/2 years ago. I started running because my husband told me too. He noted that I had the mechanics from walking fast so why not just pick my feet up and run. So I did. I started training and ran my first race after 6 months of training. It was the Bluenose 5k. I was hooked immediately. Went to register for the first Sole Sisters but it was already Sold Out!!

When do you wish you had started? As a child. Never really had the opportunity nor the support system. Wasn’t really something I even thought about.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? Fave book and Movie: To Kill a Mocking Bird. Read and watch several times a year since high school. Fave meal: Homemade Soup

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? Fun racing. I like competing with myself. Each race/run is different but for me it’s about completing a personal goal and finishing. It has to be fun or I’d get bored.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? Everything. The atmosphere is electric. I love meeting new people and hearing the stories of new RunHERS/WalkHERS. Sole Sisters is not just a race it’s an event to bring all women, young and old together, it’s a community.

What is something most people do not know about you? I have visited every province in Canada except the three territories!

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? Both. Sometimes I can train and run and other times I find it difficult, but regardless I am out there trying, meeting new people and having fun.

What is your favourite race distance? 5km all the way!

What is your favourite place to run or walk? Shubie Park because I can run/walk with the dog, and of course our Sole Sisters route because I can run/walk with fellow Sole Sisters!

When did you start running or walking? I started a few months before the first SS event in 2012. I was so nervous, I thought for sure I wouldn’t be “accepted” by the running community, I didn’t “look” like runners who did 5ks. Boy, was I wrong!

When do you wish you had started? I wish I had started earlier, but I was nervous/lacked the confidence to have people see me out there running.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? I never re-read books because there are so many out there to read! But this year “The Sea Was in their Blood” by local author Quinton Casey

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? Fun racing for sure!

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? I have so many. I love the socials. I love race kit pick up. I LOVE being on the stage doing the opening ceremonies and seeing a sea of Sole Sisters. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVE being on the course, high fiving Sole Sisters and cheering them on!

What is something most people do not know about you? I was never an overly active person. I did things with the kids, but never exercised solely for myself. In 2011, I started a couch to 5k program three times before I actually completed it and ran my first 5K race at the end of 2012.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHer or both? A runHER

What is your favourite race distance? I like them all- 5K, 10K, ½marathon. They all have unique challenges that you must overcome to be successful. That success can look so different for each of those distances.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? I enjoy running the Confederation Trail and along the north shore at Brackley Beach.

When did you start running or walking? I started running 8 years ago, when my oldest child could entertain the younger 2 for a 1/2hr in the house while I took to the country road out front. It was free and I could do it from home around the family schedules.

When do wish you had started? I have no regrets on when I started to run. Life had gotten busy with babies, work, back to school and new job. When I started, the time was right.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? A book I use to read to the children “Moosletoe” is a favourite.  Nachos made at home are delicious too.

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? Serious fun in races. I’m not very competitive. I run because I can, because I love how I feel afterwards. Bonus when I crush the time.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race?  This is my first Sole Sisters Event. It sounds like an incredible event and I’m so excited to be a part of it. Most of all, I’m excited to support and celebrate other women in their active journey!

What is something most people do not know about you? By the time I was 25 I’ve lived on two different continents and five different provinces. I also worked a volunteer firefighter for a few years.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? I am definitely a runHER

What is your favourite race distance? I have so many! I really enjoy a good 5 mile (8k) run on a week day and a 15k long run on the weekends. My favorite however is the half marathon. I think what I like the most about it is the structure of a good training plan, the discipline it takes to follow it and the amazing sense of accomplishment on race day when crossing the finish line.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? The Salt Marsh trail is one of my favorite places to run and disconnect from the every day. I do however, enjoy the fact that I can run from anywhere. I love being able to put my running shoes on a whim and just go out the door for a run.

When did you start running or walking? Running was not an easy thing for me to learn. I attempted a learn to run program three times before I finally completed it in 2016.

When do you wish you had started? I wish I had learned to run as a teenager.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? My favourite book is “Les rois maudits” by Maurice Druon. My favourite movie is “Secondhands Lions”. Favourite food: I enjoy anything home made.

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? I go to every race expecting to give it my best shot. I learned to set realistic expectations for myself so sometimes, giving it my best shot is not about performance but it’s about reaching the finish line.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? There are so many things I love about Sole Sisters but the energy on race day is amazing. It starts early in the morning with the volunteers showing up before dawn to set up the course. And then, at Race Kit pick up everyone is all smiles. Before you know it, it’s race time. It’s such an empowering feeling to stand in a sea of women, all in purple. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first race or your 100th race, if you are the first one to finish or the last one, there will always be someone at the finish line cheering for you.

Danielle

What is something most people do not know about you? I would be hard pressed to think of something people don’t know. I’m an open book to the point of over-sharing sometimes! I like to think that’s part of my charm!

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? A runHER!

What is your favourite race distance? Probably the 10K. Long enough to need to dig in for endurance, but then it’s over! I’m lazy, so I like being finished my races in under 2 hours, which I haven’t managed with a half yet. I really like 5K too. It’s a great distance, because it’s totally attainable for most people when they’re just starting out, but then if you want to get competitive, gearing up your speed can be killer. I’m still really intimidated by the longer distance races!

What is your favourite place to run or walk? Around Banook lake and in Shubie. It’s part of my regular running route, and it’s where Sole Sisters is held!

When did you start running or walking? When do you wish you had started? I remember trying and failing to start running years ago, when I was in my mid-twenties. I was doing it on a treadmill, which I didn’t enjoy, and was too afraid to go outside. Then again a few years later around my house on the roads. I never had the motivation to keep going and make it to 5K. Then, when I was 30 I met my now husband, and he is a runHIM. He’s been very supportive of my journey into running, and if it weren’t for him I wouldn’t be a runner at all. He ran with me, at my speed, for MANY slow slow runs. He was there by my side when I did my first 5k and almost threw up. He encouraged me to run every day in a month (more than once!) with him when I was first starting out. And he ran with me during my very first half marathon. I wish that I’d stuck with running when I’d started back when I was 25 years old, but sometimes things come to you later in life and they were just meant to be that way!

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? Book: Well That Escalated Quickly! By Franchesca Ramsey; movie: Dazed and Confused; meal: sushi

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? BOTH! When I race I put forth a good effort. I want to do my best at every race I do, even if my best is my best for that day. I have a tank top that says “WORLD’S OKAYEST RUNNER” which I think shows both my good humor and sense of fun, and embraces the fact that we can’t all win, but we can try hard and love ourselves and our accomplishments, no matter what they are.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? I love that Sole Sisters is entirely centered around the idea that we are a community of women who lift each other up and encourage each other. We are just as happy for the first woman across the finish line as we are for the last woman across the finish line. The journey for every woman looks different, and none is more valuable or valid than another.

What is something most people do not know about you? I’m a pretty private person so this is tough to answer. I think most people wouldn’t know that I watch the same show on repeat on Netflix over and over again. I’ll be crushed if they ever take it off Netflix.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? RunHER!! It took me a long time to call myself that! No matter how fast you run you are still a RunHER! I am a proud back of the pack runner! ….I also love walking with my dog.

What is your favourite race distance? 10km. I cried when I crossed the finish line of my first 10km race. I had never ever believed I could run that distance.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? The race course!! My regular route is around Lake Banook but really I just love running anywhere in Dartmouth!

When did you start running or walking? The very first sole sisters was my first ever event I had never even walked 5km back then but after reading an article about the first woman’s only 5km happening in Dartmouth I decided to sign up! After I crossed the finish line (and got my bling) I was hooked! Thank you sole sisters for challenging me to make my impossible possible!

When do you wish you had started? I actually starting running in my early 20s but struggled to keep going. I had an on/off relationship with running (and exercise in general) for many years.

What is your favorite book, movie or meal? This is tough. If I had to pick I’d choose: Book – The Glass Castle. Movie – The Princess Bride. Meal – Pasta followed by anything chocolate.

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? Every run is fun for the Back of the Pack!!

What is your favorite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? I love everything about Sole Sisters! I’d say the support and love that random strangers give each other is truly inspiring. Oh, and I love the bling. Oh and the purple. Purple is my favourite.

Ambassadors-1

Stacy Chesnutt but I prefer “Coach Stacy”

(if you call me coach, you start to see yourself as an athlete if you don’t already)

What is something most people do not know about you? I have love watching Professional Bull Riding!

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? runHER (even though I use walking a lot more now in my marathons!)

What is your favourite race distance? Marathon. I’ve done 60.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? It used to be the trails in Central Park and now it’s the trails in Shubie Park.

When did you start running or walking? When do you wish you had started? 17 years old and I wish I had started at 9 years old (same age as our Girls Gone Gazelle Run Club members) or sooner.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? Ulysess. It was the hardest book I’ve ever read and it took me over 25 years and 3 false starts to finish it. I thought it was terrible but I am so proud of getting through it that it is my favourite book to hate!

Do you prefer to compete or to complete when racing? I prefer to do all the races all the time. I really do race a lot! But with that much racing, I am far more focused on completing than competing. I still challenge myself a few times a year to be more serious in a race but it is not often because it is hard to go fast now! My friends know, if the tutu is on then I am racing for fun. But, if I don’t have the tutu on, then watch out, I am there to race.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? The finish line! Seeing every version of athlete represented and despite the amazing variety of runHERs and walkHERs there is the same joyful, proud, satisfied look on their faces when they finish 5K, 10.5K or 21K. Okay sometimes it also includes a bit of suffering but seeing them recognize (possibly for the first time) that they are athletes is just amazing. I am so proud of every girl and woman I see finish her race.

Jocelyn

What is something most people do not know about you? I listen to at least 20 hours of podcasts a week, mostly about true crime.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? RunHER for sure!

What is your favourite race distance? The longer the better! I love 10ks and loved the one half-marathon I’ve done so far.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? Along the Waterfront Trail in Dartmouth. It has the best view of the city anywhere and you’re guaranteed to see other runners along the way.

When did you start running or walking? When do you wish you had started? I started running and LIKING IT in October 2017 at age 24. I had done running as cross-training for sprint canoe and ran cross-country in high school, but never liked it. I think for me it happened at the right time.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? Book: The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. Movie: Moulin Rouge.Meal: Chocolate tofu pie from the Wooden Monkey.

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? It depends on the race! I enjoy a straight-up fun race as well as a challenging race (AKA type 2 fun.)

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? My favourite part is the excitement at the start line, in the crowd of tutus!

Amanda

What is something most people do not know about you? I recently turned 40, and I’m working on a list of 40 things I want to do this year. Becoming a Sole Sister Ambassador and completing my first half marathon are both on this list.  I’m actually a pretty shy person – putting myself out there like this is a huge step!

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHER or both? My first answer to this question was automatically a walkHER, but then I thought about what makes a runHER.  Is it the number of races you finish? No. Is it how fast you’re able to run? No. So, what makes a runner?  Someone who laces up her sneakers and tries her best. I’m currently on week eight of training for the Sole Sister’s Half Marathon – proud to finally realize I am a runHER.

What is your favourite race distance? I really enjoy the 5K runs.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? I love walking and running the dirt road to Taylor Head Beach near Sheet Harbour.  The views are beautiful!

When did you start running or walking? When do you wish you had started? I did my first Sole Sister’s 5K in 2016, and I’ve been hooked since then.  I wish I had started a long time ago!

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? I love pizza, but if I don’t have to cook, I’m not picky!!

Do you prefer to compete or to complete when racing? I really appreciate the Sole Sister’s philosophy – Finish lines not finish times.  I set personal goals for myself, and just have fun!

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race? There are so many great parts about these runs!  The energy at the start and finish lines is incredible.  Everyone is so supportive along the way. Personally, I’ve gotten to run with my mother and sister, which was a great experience!  The feeling you get when you cross that finish line is like no other!
