Age- Group: 40-49

Run/Walk? runHER that walks races from time to time

Favorite Race Distance? Anything LONG, the better; 61 marathons and counting, hundreds of half marathons, eight ironman races, several ultras and one 100-mile race.

What year did you start running? 1988

First pair of running shoes? Nike Air Pegasus (by 1992 I was wearing them with a purple swoosh)

Why did you start running/walking? My best friend wanted to join the track club as she liked a boy on the track team. She quit two weeks into the season but I stayed.

Why do you continue? Habit and love

What is the best running advice you never took? Build your mileage slowly and over time to avoid an over-use injury! [Dr. Joan Ullyot was the author of Women’s Running in 1976, the first book to challenge myths about women’s running. She coined the famous 10 percent rule: don’t increase your weekly mileage by more than 10% from week to week to limit injuries.]

Best advice you did take? Join a running team/club or find a running partner to improve your running.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? Currently it is the race bling because I am infatuated with all the 2020 designs, but normally it would be the feel good vibe of all Sole Sisters events.

Run/Walk? walkHER

What year did you start running/walking? 2012

First pair of running shoes? actual running shoes would be 2012, but I did rock a good Spice Girl platform sneaker in the day!

Why did you start running/walking? because I needed to do something about my health; my physical and mental health. Nothing kept me going: I’d join a gym and quit; I’d choose the “easy” way out of any potential exercise. My health was suffering.

Why do you continue? I’ve seen the effects from physical exercise: better sleep, more energy, moving easier.  best advice you never took: don’t do anything foolish (obviously it was from my mom, and obviously it’s the first thing I forget when I sign up to do something foolish!)

Best advice you did take? trust your gut. I always do and it’s why I always pick the foolish but SAFE option

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? What don’t I like?!?? The fact that we leave no woman behind has a very special place in my heart. Helping women before the race and during is a magical opportunity that I never take for granted. Like I say on Race Day: a sole Sisters day is a second Christmas!

Run/Walk? runHER

Favorite Race Distance? 10k. It’s long enough to be a fair distance, but not so daunting to me as a half marathon!

What year did you start running? 2014, I think? I dabbled before that, but that is when I started truly running in earnest, and had people to support me in doing so.

First pair of running shoes? Something from Saucony, they weren’t the right shoe for me at all. I tried Nike Air Zoom Pegas, and now they’re my shoe!

Why did you start running/walking? For fitness/exercise. When my husband and I started dating I was overweight, and he was quite fit. He encouraged me to get back into running, and helped me work up to a 5k, then a 10k and then a half marathon.

Why do you continue to do it? Still for fitness, but also now it is one of the “things” my husband and I do. We have friends we run with, our son has come with is on half marathon in his stroller, and our daughter will start joining us when she is old enough.

What is the best running advice you never took? Stretch regularly

Best advice you did take? Join a running team/club or find a running partner to improve your running.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? It’s twofold: women supporting women in their goals, and supporting introducing young girls to the sport!

Jocelyn

Age-Group: I am 26!

Run/Walk: Run

What year did you start running/walking? 2017 first pair of running shoes: Reebok shoes from Costco that my mom decided she didn’t want

Why did you start? Because I knew I should have some kind of exercise in my life– running was the easiest to schedule and to do alone. I always thought I hated running but a part of me knew I could love it. I thought running Sole Sisters 5k seemed fun!

Why do you continue? To achieve new goals, to spend time with my running friends, to relieve stress, to get pretty medals, and many more reasons.

What is the best advice you never took? Keep up with doing my physio exercises, whoops!

Best advice you did take? To take it slow when increasing my race distances — Thanks Coach Stacy!

What do you like best about sole sisters? Seeing women support each other <3

Run/Walk: Run!

Favorite Race Distance: I have love for all the distances, but for different reasons! I love one mile races and 5K’s for speed. 10K’s and Half Marathons are great because you get to combine strategy with pace. Marathons are just epic and completing one makes you an automatic rock star.

What year did you start running? 2010

First pair of running shoes? Nike something. I bought them at Footlocker because I didn’t know any better. When I went to replace them I got fitted for proper running shoes and discovered those Nike’s were a full size too small.

Why did you start running/walking? I was at a Christmas party and a group of us decided that our goal for 2010 was to get fitter. We decided to run the 5K at the BlueNose that coming May. In December, May seemed like a long way away so I agreed. Leading up to the race I only managed to run 3K in my training. I was very intimated on the start line of that first race, but the gun went off and I went out with the crowd. I crossed that finish line feeling like a total champion; I LOVED it. I went home, signed up for another 5K that summer and I haven’t looked back.

Why do you continue to do it? I love it. I love that running can always be exactly what I need it to be on any given day. Also, I have met incredibly amazing people through the running community.

What is the best running advice you never took? To slow down and run my easy runs at an easier pace. To be fair, it’s not that I haven’t taken this advice, it’s just a continual work in progress.

Best advice you did take? Get a coach. I enlisted the help of coach when I decided to run my first full marathon. I learned so much from my coach and it took my running to the next level. Also, my own piece of advice is that fast shoes are real.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? I love how empowering it is. Sole Sisters truly believes in all runHER’s and is completely accepting of everyone regardless of where they are on their running/fitness journey.

Age- Group: 50-59

Run/Walk? runHER  But I do like walking as well.

Favorite Race Distance?  10k

What year did you start running? I ran in high school, I was a basketball player so pretty much practice was running and drills!! As an adult I started running in 2011.

First pair of running shoes? High School days probably Adidas, Nike and Reebok.  Now i prefer Saucony.

Why did you start running/walking? I was always a walker and one day I decided I wanted to run The Run For The Cure 5K . So I trained myself and came in second among runners! I was Hooked!

Why do you continue to do it? I enjoy being in nature and it brings me mental clarity. I also formed a local walk/run group in my community, it keeps me accountable while having fun!!

What is the best running advice you never took? Foam Roll

Best advice you did take? Now I know Foam Rolling is my friend and physio exercises do help.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? The camaraderie, the friendliest and always fun races!! Feeling of empowerment!! The bling and swag too!!

Run/Walk? runHER

Favorite Race Distance?  Anything (except the marathon – haven’t tried that yet!) but after just completing my second half-marathon recently, I think I might be hooked.

What year did you start running? 2016

First pair of running shoes? A pair of clearance mizunos

Why did you start running/walking? For “me” time after the birth of my second child!

Why you continue to do it? I fell in love with how running made me feel (strong, powerful, relaxed!). I can’t imagine giving it up now, and I’m proud of the example I’m setting for my two young daughters.

What is the best running advice you never took? Easy running should make up 80% of your weekly mileage! I have a bad habit of running my easy days too fast. Currently working on that!!!

Best advice you did take? Dress as if it’s 10 degrees warmer than it is.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? I love the sense of sisterhood and community. Such a large group of women of various backgrounds, shapes, speed, etc. all supporting one another is really inspirational! And the bling is always spectacular, that doesn’t hurt either!

Run/Walk? Runner

Favorite Race Distance? I love the challenge of the half marathon

What year did you start running? 2016

First pair of running shoes? New Balance 880 (it’s still my favorite running shoe)

Why you started? I used to be very active and life got busy. I wanted to make changes in my life to be more active again. I used to be a swimmer and found that it took too much planning. I joined the gym and found excuses not go. (too far, schedule conflict etc.) I decided I needed something that I could just get up, open the door and go so running seemed a logical choice.

Why you continue? I love running. NO matter how busy my week is, I make time every week to go out and run. It has become the time I dedicate to myself. I cannot think of one time I went out running, no matter how tired I was or how busy my day was, and regretted it. It’s part of my self care.

Best advice you never took? Yoga is an amazing cross training exercise for runners. Don’t wait to start cross training.

Best advice you did take? 2 weeks before my first half marathon in 2016 I was in panic mode and I didn’t think I could do this. I as contemplating to change my distance the the Quarter Marathon but Coach Stacy told me to trust my training plan and to stick with it. I took her advice and I was able to complete my first half marathon of many.

What you like best about Sole Sisters? I love meeting new runhers and walkhers at our first social in the Spring and watch them progress and hit their goals and milestones. I love the friendships I’ve made through Soles Sisters and as an Ambassador, race day is the by far the best day! I love the energy on that day. I love cheering everyone as they complete their race.  And let’s admit it, the medals are pretty awesome!

Run/Walk? walkHer

Favorite Race Distance? 5km right now!

What year did you start walking? technically since I was 10months old lol… but I have been walking for exercise for about 5 years, more intensely for 2 1/2 years

First pair of running shoes? Probably Nike Jordan’s! I think they were black and purple.

What year did you start running? I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my life, I went to weight watchers for the first time when I was in grade 6. I began walking as it means of exercising about 5 years ago while on the wait list for bariatric surgery here in Nova Scotia.

Why do you continue to do it? I love walking dose for my mental and physical health. I feel better and sleep better when I exercise on a regular bases. It is also part of my post bariatric surgery life. I had gastric sleeve two years ago and it is recommended that we do an hour of physical activity a day.

What is the best running advice you never took? probably to stretch before and after walking. I tend to get shinsplints which are very annoying! But I can never seem to remember to stretch before or after walking

Best advice you did take? Focus on your on journey not on others!

What do you like best about Sole sisters? Where to begin? I love that it is women supporting other women.. I love that we all uplift and empower each other, not only on race day but through out the year! My Sole Sisters have been someone of biggest cheerleader on my journey to better health and I am so thankful for all of them.

Best advice you did take? Get fitted for proper running shoes.

What do you like best about Sole Sisters? The atmosphere and getting to watch the next generation of runhers/walkers discover their love of running/walking. I should also add the bling, love bling.

What is something most people do not know about you? I was never an overly active person. I did things with the kids, but never exercised solely for myself. In 2011, I started a couch to 5k program three times before I actually completed it and ran my first 5K race at the end of 2012.

Do you think of yourself as a runHER, walkHer or both? A runHER

What is your favourite race distance? I like them all- 5K, 10K, ½marathon. They all have unique challenges that you must overcome to be successful. That success can look so different for each of those distances.

What is your favourite place to run or walk? I enjoy running the Confederation Trail and along the north shore at Brackley Beach.

When did you start running or walking? I started running 8 years ago, when my oldest child could entertain the younger 2 for a 1/2hr in the house while I took to the country road out front. It was free and I could do it from home around the family schedules.

When do wish you had started? I have no regrets on when I started to run. Life had gotten busy with babies, work, back to school and new job. When I started, the time was right.

What is your favourite book, movie or meal? A book I use to read to the children “Moosletoe” is a favourite.  Nachos made at home are delicious too.

Do you prefer serious racing or serious fun in racing? Serious fun in races. I’m not very competitive. I run because I can, because I love how I feel afterwards. Bonus when I crush the time.

What is your favourite part of Sole Sisters Women’s Race?  This is my first Sole Sisters Event. It sounds like an incredible event and I’m so excited to be a part of it. Most of all, I’m excited to support and celebrate other women in their active journey!
